No matter how old you are - we have the german course that’s just right for you. If you are 18 or older, you can attend German courses for adults at the  GLS German Language School in Berlin. Classes there run all year round. If you are younger than 18, you can attend our summer camps & summer schools in Germany - in Berlin or Munich.

Learn German @ Munich Young & Fun Summer Camp

  • Ages 7 - 14

This summer camp with German language classes for children is 50 km south of Munich in Josefstal, a traditional Bavaria village in the Alp mountains. The village is very popular with German kids & teens, who like to spend their summer holidays here. You´ll meet some of them at our summer camp: they stay on site with you and best of all, they do all the after class activities together with you. So you can test your German right away! Your school is a kind of college 800 m above sea level, and the scenery is fantastic. Every week we organize at least 2 excursions to Munich, maybe the most beautiful city in Germany.

Learn German @ Munich Adventure Camp

  • Ages 12 - 17

The adventure camp (a beautifully restored former hotel) is south of Munich right next to one of the most pristine lakes in the German Alps, Lake
Spitzingsee. The view is wonderful, looking out of the window you´ll see either lake or mountains. Our Adventure Camp is fantastic if you like sports & adventure - you´ll have lots of fun after German classes: we´ll go hiking with a GPS, build rafts or sleep outside by the campfire. Munich is just 50 km away, and every week we organize 2 trips to Munich.

Learn German in Munich @ Munich Castle

  • Ages 14 - 17

This camp in Munich is truly spectacular: you´ll learn German in a medieval castle! The castle is in the southern city center of Munich, on the
banks of River Isar. And Munich Highlights such as Hofbräuhaus, Bavaria Filmstudios or Frauenkirche are within easy reach. You´ll have German classes in the morning, and after class our activity program begins: we´ll have barbecues on River Isar, play volleyball or go shopping in Munich. You´ll get to see all the highlights that Munich has to offer! And we also show you how the region around Munich looks like, there will be weekend trips to lakes nearby and into the mountains.

Learn German @ Berlin College

  • Ages 16 - 20

At the Berlin College you´ll learn German in the very center of Berlin´s trendiest district. The college has a 9.000 m² campus in Kastanienallee -
with fancy clubs, cafes and designer shops just down the street. The street is nicknamed casting ally, because there are so many films and fashion shootings here. Every day we´ll show you a different part of Berlin - you´ll get to see all the highlights: Museumsinsel, Badeschiff, the Berlin Wall ...

The German courses start in the afternoon - we do Berlin sightseeing in the morning, and at night we take you out in Berlin: we go clubbing, play minigolf or hang out in Mauerpark. 

Learn German @ Berlin Villa

The Berlin Villa has 40 beds and a big garden - ideal for a summer holiday with German courses, if you like it small, cozy and familial. The villa is like a safe island in the very center of bustling Berlin: it is located near Kurfuerstendamm, the most famous shopping street in the western city center. In the villa you live and learn German with
students from all over the world, and together you will set out to explore Berlin. Learn German @ Berlin Riverside Summer Camp

Big city fun + a relaxing summer holiday?! No problem: at our Riverside camp you´ll have both: The camp is on the banks of River Havel, one of Berlin´s two big rivers, and where the camp is, River Havel is nearly as wide as a small lake. A perfect place to relax and socialize after German classes.

Hard to believe, that such a peaceful place is part of a big city like Berlin, and yet it is: The city center is within easy reach, and you´ll get to see all the trendy places in Berlin. We will show you cool cafes, fancy shops and of course famous highlights such as Berlin´s new downtown  Potsdamer Platz, Museumsinsel or the  Berliner Wall!

Learn German @ Berlin Intensive Summer School

You are looking for an INTENSIVE course in Berlin? Then this summer school is the perfect choice for you: German courses include 5 lessons per day -instead of 4 as in the other GLS summer schools in Berlin. Don´t think more work equals less fun, on the contrary: You´ll get to learn alot, and your stay will be very comfortable: you will live in the same building where the classrooms are. And best of all: you will explore Berlin with friends from all over the planet! The school is a perfect home base forventuring out into Berlin: It is located just north of the city center and and it won´t take you more than 15 minutes to get into the VERY heart of Berlin. 

Learn German @ Berlin Water Sports Camp

The summer camp is located on one of the beautiful lakes that surround Berlin, in the little village of Blossin. This camp has fantastic water sports facilities - with lots of canoes, sailing boats and surfing equipment. When German courses finish, in the afternoon, we go canoeing,sailing or surfing. And of course there will be beach parties and
barbecues by the lakeside, too. Berlin is only 30 km away: Every week we arrange 2 excursions to Berlin and you´ll get to see all the highlights: Berlin´s neues Downtown: Potsdamer Platz, the Berlin Wall, Museumsinsel ...

German for Kids @ Berlin Young & Fun Summer Camp

  • Ages 7 - 14

You´ll learn German staying next to a great lake in Berlin, and more than that - you´ll also meet German children your age! The camp uses the facilities of a private university in Berlin Schmöckwitz. German kids spend their summer holidays here, too, and they will take part in all the activities and excursions that we offer after class - a great way to practice your German right away! You have a choice of various activities every day: we´ll do talent shows, have barbecues, go swimming... . And every week we organize 2 excursions to Berlin highlights such as Potsdamer Platz, Berlin´s new  Downtown, Berlin Wall or Berlin Zoo 


High School Germany - going to school in Germany

GLS Berlin is an international high school exchange organisation: Since 1983 we have been sending German high school students abroad (e,g. to the USA, Brasil, France), and we also place international students at German high schools. GLS is a member of the DFH German High School Association.

Day Schools & Host Families

GLS won´t place you "anywhere" in Germany - with GLS you´ll go to school in really cool and metropolitan places: in Berlin, Potsdam, Bremen or Bayreuth (Google map). You can even select the city that you like. The advantages of day schools: 1. They are less pricey than boarding schools and 2. You can also do short stays of 2 or 3 months. The requirements for day schools are:

  • Age between 15 - 18
  • German on level A2 (online Test). If you don´t have that level yet, join our preparatory German courses in Berlin

The Schools

All schools are state-run Gymnasien= a type of secondary school that leads up to university and is reserved for very good students. Ca. 30 % of German students attend this
type of secondary school (more about Gymnasien in Germany).All schools are in Berlin, Bremen and Munich. You can select the city, not a specific school. To give you an idea what the schools look like, below the websites of 2 schools, that cooperate with GLS:

The host families

All families have been inspected by GLS. Some families have sons and daughters, who do an exchange program as well: While their kids go to school in Canada, France or Argentina, they are happy to welcome an exchange student going to school in Germany. The families live within easy reach of the school that you attend. They provide a single or double room and full board. More about host families in the FAQ section. 

Prices include

  • a certificate of attendance, issued by the German high school

Boarding Schools & Private Schools in Germany

You can also attend a boarding school in Germany with GLS. Boarding schools are more expensive than day schools, and usually they expect a minimum stay of one year. One big advantage: The boarding schools below offer you the possibility to do the "Abitur" and then go on to study at a German university. If you want to do the Abitur, plan to spend at least the final 2 years prior to Abitur exams in Germany. All boarding schools except for one (the BBIS) demand that you speak German quite well - if you don´t, you can first do a preparatory course in Berlin and then transfer to the boarding school of your choice.

Boarding school in Berlin - with possibility to do Abitur

Berlin - Schulfarm Insel Scharfenberg

Schulfarm Insel Scharfenberg is a boarding school with a a simply fantastic location: on beautiful Island Scharfenberg in Lake Tegel. The Island is within the city limits of Berlin, a bit northwest of the the city center. As this school is a public school, it is significantly less pricey than the other boarding schools in Berlin, which are private schools. But the entry requirements at this public school are demanding - very good German on level C1 and a minimum age of 16. If your German is lower than level C1, you can do a foundation course first and then switch to this school.

the School

... was founded in 1929, on the grounds of a beautiful farm with horse stables and botanic garden. All school facilities are on the island - classrooms, foto laboratory, cafeteria, sailing station, boarding houses for boys and girls. The whole island belongs to the school, it is not only a very safe, but also a very beautiful environment - with lots of opportunities for swimming, sailing and canoeing. It takes about 50 minutes to get to the city center of Berlin: ferry first, then bus or metro.

Accommodation in host families is possible, too. A popular option is to stay at school during the week, and to stay with a host family on weekends and in holidays. Host families live off the island, mostly in Berlin Tegel. To get to the island is easy: there is a ferry going back and forth all day between the island and mainland Berlin


Berlin - Villa Elisabeth

Villa Elisabeth is a private boarding school in Wildau, a village just outside Berlin surrounded by beautiful lakes. To get to the city center of Berlin takes about 50 minutes (more about Wildau). The school is small and international students are taken care of very well. GLS has placed several exchange students here, some of them
staying 2 or 3 years in order to pass the Abitur. Villa Elisabeth demands German on level B2 - if your German is lower than that, you can do a foundation course first and then switch to this school.

The school building is a historic mansion, built at the end of the 19th century. The atmosphere is friendly and familial, as it is a small school with only 250 students. The school is open-minded and demanding. A strong point are the so called Arbeitsgemeinschaften, i.e. extracurricular clubs, that students join to follow the activity of
interest to them. On offer are: Learning Chinese, Dancing, Oral History, Golfing, Sailing, Horseback Riding.

The majority of the German students lives at home, most boarders are international students. The boarding conditions are very comfortable - in 2-bed-rooms with own bath.

If you prefer host family accommodation, please let us know. We can arrange that, too. The price for homestay is lower than for boarding: 500 € less per semester.


BBIS - Berlin Brandenburg International School

The BBIS is an international IB school - which means a) that you can do the IB here which allows you to study anywhere in the world (in Germany, too) and b) that you don´t have to speak German in order to go to school here. Classes are in English, German is taught as a subject like French or Spanish. 30% of the students are Germans, 70 % internationals, i.e. the sons and daughters of diplomats and expatriats living in Berlin and exchange students.

the School

The BBIS is in Kleinmachnow, a small town right next to Berlin - ca. 40 minutes by city train into the city center. Kleinmachnow has a long history, founded in the 14th century. During communist times, it was right "behind" the Berlin Wall, and after the Wall came down, Kleinmachnow soon became very popular with wealthy Berliners who moved here, as they enjoy the lakes and the woods. The school has its own campus right next to a lake  - see  photos of campus facilities

Brandenburg - Stift Neuzelle

Stift Neuzelle is a private boarding school with very special facilities: it uses the premises of a former monastery, that was founded in 1268. The premises are very beautiful and you can really feel history here. The school is in the center of a small village, that is named Neuzelle, too. Berlin is about 130 km away, the closest city nearby is
Eisenhüttenstadt (8 km).

The school is small and international students are taken care of very well. Neuzelle demands German on level B1 - if your German is not on that level yet, you can do a foundation course first (which takes place in Berlin) and then switch to this school.

2. Preparatory German Courses in Berlin


Most schools demand German on level A2 as a minimum, some expect B1 or even C1. No problem if you don´t have the required level yet. Just do a preparatory course at the GLS German Language School in Berlin.

Prep courses are taught in 4-week-units, with 20 weekly lessons in mini groups (max. 6 future high school students). The price includes accommodation on a host family, single room, full board. Not included: public transport, insurance.
